VIP guests back bid to for everyone to get online

BARNSLEY'S web surfers are in for a treat next week...

The South Yorkshire town celebrates the national Get Online Day at one of its most popular adult education centres.

On Friday (October 23), Royston's Lifelong Learning Centre will be among 700 places across Britain hosting sessions for the UK-wide Get Online Day.

The event is supported by the Totally Online Barnsley campaign to get everyone in the borough online by 2012.

Royston Lifelong Learning Centre is inviting local residents and VIP guests along.

These include Martha Lane Fox, dot-com entrepreneur and co-founder of Lastminute.com, Barnsley Council's chief executive Phil Coppard and managing director for UK online centres Helen Milner.

Local people will also be invited to the event.

Nigel Ball, who manages Royston's Lifelong Learning Centre, says: "We're really excited about having Martha Lane Fox visit and showing visitors how all the different community services at the centre work together."

The centre already attracts regular surfers – and they're not all computer-savvy teenagers, either.

One frequent visitor is Sheila Govier, 67, for whom the biggest benefit of using the internet is communicating with friends and family.

Sheila's brother sent her on a computer course at the centre and this kick-started her interest in the web and its benefits.

"I'm so glad I did – it's the best thing I've ever done," she said.

Sheila added that her best moment online was when she emailed her nephew, who was travelling the world at the time and yet replied immediately.

- Royston Community Learning Centre opens its doors at 9.45am for the event's official launch at 10am.
