Villagers toast the new year

NEW year celebrations were given a community feel in a Sheffield village.

More than 300 people living in Stannington toasted 2013 when they gathered for a family-friendly party organised especially for residents.

The sell-out event saw local band The Bootleggers and bagpipe-playing Alex Ritchie entertain guests at the Lomas Hall.

Ticket costs were kept to a minimum and the venue was central to ensure as many could attend as possible.

About £125 was raised for charity Breast Cancer Care on the night and plans are already underway for a similar event in 2013.

Event organiser Carly Whitfield, of Stannington, said: “We are thrilled with the response we received.

“Everyone had a brilliant time and we’re happy we put on a great community event.”
