Village fete right in heart of city
A BUSY city centre shopping street was transformed into a friendly village festival which attracted scores of families for a fun day out.
The Moor Village Fete yesterday was the first of its kind and featured a host of activities designed to bring the community together whilst celebrating the improvements which have been made in the area over recent months as part of its 2.5 million makeover.
A host of stalls were set out selling everything from arts and crafts to cakes, while live music and street performers added to the atmosphere.
Popular guests on the afternoon included kids' favourite Peppa Pig - who attracted scores of excited youngsters keen to say hello - and some rabbits, goats and cows from Heeley City Farm.
Sisters Felicity and Charlotte Cutts enjoyed meeting the animals and having a go at feeding them. The four and five-year-olds were out with their grandmother Dale Noels, from Gleadless, for the afternoon.
She said: "We're having a nice time. We've done a bit of shopping on the Moor and it was a bit of a surprise to come across all this on the way home."
A police van and fire engine gave kids the chance to have explore inside and have a go at switching on the lights and alarms.
Jade Marshall, aged five, was excited to be sitting up front in a fireman's helmet alongside one of the crew.
Tom Ellis, from Parson Cross, who had taken her along to the event, said: "We're having a nice time - the fire engine's proving a hit and she's met Peppa Pig which she really enjoyed."
Nicola Green, from Gleadless, said she was enjoying a lovely afternoon with her daughters Amy and Chloe Herrett, particularly watching her girls ride the Bucking Bronco!
Sandra Barley, centre liaison manager for The Moor, said: "We wanted to do something for shoppers, city centre workers and visitors to enjoy.
"We are so proud of how The Moor looks with the new public realm, some fantastic art and everyone's favourite shops."
Coun Roger Davison, city council cabinet member for culture, sport tourism and city centre events, said: "Sheffield city centre continues to attract new retailers and host major sporting, cultural and music events.
"I think this fete brings together all of the aspects of village and market life with the modernisations of our city's public spaces perfectly."
