“This old town has a story, started back in ‘39, one of faith, hope and glory and women on the factory line.

“Steel-toe boots and helmets hiding feminine curls...because there’s nothing much tougher than a northern girl!”

Women Of Steel Dorothy Slingsby, left and Kathleen Roberts, chart hitmaking song writers John Reilly, Eliot Kenedy and John Parr.

Women Of Steel Dorothy Slingsby, left and Kathleen Roberts, chart hitmaking song writers John Reilly, Eliot Kenedy and John Parr.

So starts new song Women Of Steel, aptly forged in the Foundry, part of Grammy award-wining producer Eliot Kennedy’s Steelworks Studio.

Eliot teamed up to write it with St Elmo’s Fire rocker John Parr and Boy On A Dolphin frontman John Reilly.

And they had a special audience to watch rehearsals at the studio when The Star took along Dorothy Slingsby and Kathleen Roberts – two of the women themselves.

The song will be premiered at the Women Of Steel Concert, featuring Tony Christie, Heaven 17, ABC’s Martin Fry, Baby Bird, John Shuttleworth and more, at Sheffield City Hall tomorrow night from 7.30pm.

There are plans to release the song as a charity single, as part of a £150,000 appeal for a statue to honour the city’s Women Of Steel who kept the steel mills going in two world wars.

A £10.99 album, including tracks by Richard Hawley, Paul Carrack, Lesley Garrett and Kate Rusby, is available on iTunes and the official concert website at www.womenofsteeltheconcert.co.uk

Dorothy said: “It’s just brilliant, wonderful. To think somebody has written a sing about us is just wonderful.”

Eliot said: “It’s going to be great when we perform it, with so much talent on stage.”
