Care worker Kirsty, aged 31, of Model Village Creswell, is just one of the many Tengi app users who have won big money just for downloading and using the app, which is completely free.
And tomorrow night - Friday, February 26 - in its first eve super draw, one winner will scoop a whopping £10,000.
Tengi, described as WhatsApp with prizes, allows users to send texts, emoticons, photos, videos and audio messages. It tells users when their message has been delivered and read.
But where it is unique - it gives away half of its revenues every week in a free draw of all its users, with the usual £1,000 first prize and hundreds of £25 and £5 winners.
Mum of two Kirsty is planning to spend her win on a summer family holiday to Great Yarmouth with lorry driver husband Paul, 37, and children, Tylah, 11, and Laylah, two.
"I couldn't believe it when I had won £1,000. Tengi is a great app and easy to use. I don;t use any other now. I used to have WhatsApp, but with Tengi you can also win cash," she said.
Sheffield mum Olesia Tartakovski and Rotherham man Mark Carew have also each won £1,000 using Tengi.
Olesia said: “Tengi is brilliant. A great app. I don’t gamble or even do the Lottery. I signed up because it is a free text service and we have set up a group for parents at school. It’s a very convenient way for us to talk together. The bonus is it gives away cash prizes every week just for using it”
Tengi allows users to send free texts, with emoticons, stickers, photos, video and audio. It is described as ‘the app that gives back’ and ‘Whatsapp with cash prizes’.
Tengi founder Neil Laycock, former CEO of internet service provider Plusnet, hopes winners’ stories will encourage others to sign up.
He explained how the more friends you have on Tengi and the more you use it, the more virtual tickets you get for each draw. During the super draw you get 16 tickets for every new contact that downloads and uses it.
Tengi knows if they are in your contacts list, simply by matching numbers once a friend downloads and installs the app.
Neil, at the Tengi office based at the University of Sheffield Bio-incubator, a new business start-ups building, in Leavygreave Road, said: “We don’t sell anyone’s data. We make money from advertising and selling merchandise, then give away 50 per cent of our revenue. It’s taking the app world by storm.
“And the big news is we are giving away £10,000.”
