Retired boxing champ Ryan and former Sheffield Wednesday and England footballer David today called on fans to sponsor them on a three-day sponsored cycle ride at the end of the month.

They hope to complete a 170-mile Way Of The Roses coast to coast route - from Morecambe to Bridlington - in aid of Neurocare, which funds lifesaving equipment at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

It supports research and treatment to help people suffering from brain tumours, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, strokes, epilepsy and more.

The stars, sponsored by businesses including Sheffield-based personalised branding company POW UK Ltd, say people can make a donation towards their £5,000 target at www.justgiving.com/hirstyandrhodes.

Ryan, a former European light middleweight champion, said of their trek, taking place from October 29 to 31: “I’ve never done anything like this before. I was a teenager the last time I was on a bike! But I’m enjoying it.

“We’re sportsmen. But it’s not a race, it’s about getting across the finish line.”

David revealed a knee injury he suffered playing football set them back.

He laughed: “I went playing football thinking I could still do it. Now I’m thinking cycling is the way forward.

“Ryan has been training harder.

“I find it difficult because I live in the vicinity of pubs.”

Corin McCann, senior fundraiser for Neurocare in Sheffield, said: “We’re so grateful to Ryan and David.

“It’s because of support like this that we can continue the work we do.”
