VIDEO: See what Sheffield's Christmas lights looked like in the 1970s

The nostalgic clip, which is available to view on video sharing website YouTube, shows the amazing displays of lights that greeted shoppers in the city centre in the 1970s - with scores of different streets, buildings and public spaces festooned with thousands of coloured bulbs.

The footage, shot circa 1974, will spark memories for Sheffielders of a certain age with footage of long lost city centre buildings and places such as the Classic Cinema, The Golden Egg restaurant and the Midland Bank.

Commenting on the video, petecob3 posted: "Used to love going to town to see the lights back then - and now look what we get or not get - pityful."

Susan Crookes added: "Those were the days! I remember being taken on the open top bus to do the Christmas light trip!

"They used to start down near the markets and Ladys' Bridge and carry way on past Atkinsons! It's a real shame the magic has gone."

morgansifer said: "I can remember when the lights were this good. We would always park up in Atkinsons car park at the bottom of The Moor and work our way down to the Hole In The Road. So magical!"

Another user, rar321blue wrote: "Sheffield had the best xmas lights in the country back then. My dad used to take me on a Sunday to watch them being put up...as the shops were shut the roads were quiet, oh happy days!"
