A sex attacker raped a pregnant stranger at knifepoint, then broke into a house and repeatedly raped a grieving 17-year-old girl, during a four-hour ‘night of terror’.

Nicholas Totty beat up the terrified teenager’s mother when she tried to intervene – and forced her to watch as he raped her daughter, whose page he had previously looked at on Facebook.

Convicted - Nicholas Totty.

Convicted - Nicholas Totty.

Totty – a former chef who was thrown out of the Royal Navy for using body-building steroids in 2010 – was branded a ‘danger to the public’ and told he would not be considered for parole until he has served at least 10 years behind bars.

Sheffield Crown Court heard Totty had no previous convictions – but a psychiatrist found he had a ‘significant personality disorder’ and ‘psychopathic disposition’ and was at risk of committing further ‘random violent sex crimes, which would be unheralded and unpredictable’.

Andrew Dallas, prosecuting, said 6ft 4ins Totty was powerfully-built with a ‘high sex drive’.

“The charges arise from three separate sexually-motivated attacks on women,” he said.

“The attacks were carried out over four hours, were of increasing gravity, and considerable violence was used.”

The first took place at 9.15pm on Friday, September 27, when Totty tried to attack a 24-year-old woman walking her dog along Herringthorpe Valley Road, Rotherham.

Luckily the woman’s Staffordshire bull terrier cross intervened and Totty fled.

But two hours later he struck again, targeting a 27-year-old woman who was eight weeks’ pregnant, in Moorgate, Rotherham.

He hit her over the head with a torch before raping her at knifepoint and threatening to ‘slit her throat’.

When she fled he tried to drag her into the grounds of Rotherham Hospital, but a member of the public intervened after hearing her screams.

Totty then tried to get into the home of an old flame, but the woman refused to let him in.

But at 1am he struck again, breaking into the home of a 17-year-old girl and her mother, aged 46.

Mr Dallas said the women were already grieving following a family bereavement.

But in horrifying scenes Totty overpowered both women, dragging them by the hair into the bathroom where he then raped the teenager twice.

When her mum tried to intervene, he slammed her head against the tiled floor and stamped on her body.

Totty then dragged the teenager and her mother into a bedroom, and raped the 17-year-old a third time, forcing her mum to watch.

Detective Superintendent Lisa Ray said the streets of Rotherham were safer with Totty behind bars.

“This was the most grotesque and hideous of crimes,” she said. “It is difficult to find the words to truly describe the gravity of Totty’s actions and the life-changing impact it will have had on all the victims.”
