Firefighters battled blazes at a number of South Yorkshire properties following a dramatic electrical storm last night.

At least two properties in the region – a house and a barber shop – were hit in the massive thunderstorm, which began at about 3am.

Readers have sent in powerful video footage which depicts neighbourhoods lit up by flashes of lightning, with loud booms of thunder afterwards.

The storm also caused some low key flooding in some areas, including near Jenkin Road, Wincobank, where the Cote de Jenkin Road hill climb has taken place today.

A home on Meadowhall Road, Kimberworth, Rotherham, is thought to have been struck through the roof by lightning at 3.10am, while the Sweeney 4 men’s barbers on Ecclesall Road was also damaged.

In Kimberworth, there was no fire but scorch marks were left in a bedroom.

On Ecclesall Road, the crews were called at 3.20am and were there until 5am.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The window has been put through and it has now been boarded up.

“The flames were coming out of that window and the damage is quite severe.”

Meanwhile, firefighters battled a huge blaze at a Sheffield waste recycling unit.

Early reports suggested the 200m by 60m building on the Yarra Industrial Estate, off Station Road, Ecclesfield, had also been struck by lightning but an investigation into the cause is still underway.

Seven fire engines plus an aerial platform tackled the blaze from about 4am. This was scaled back to three engines as the flames were brought under control and firefighters spent the next few hours damping down.

The SYFR spokesman said: “Residents in the area may have heard some explosions towards the end of the incident, at around 10am.

“We reassure people that this was an expected part of firefighting operations which helped bring the incident to a close.

“An investigation into the cause is under way and will continue over the weekend.”

Nobody is thought to have been injured in the fire at the site, which also comprised a car repair workshop.

Tonight is forecast to be a fine and dry evening.
