A determined Doncaster dad and his daughter are set to go to great lengths for a ‘rally good’ time this summer - by taking part in a marathon motoring challenge.

Jez Greenwood-Mitchell and daughter Charlotte are set to drive through four European countries in just three days after signing up to take part in the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally next month.

The intrepid duo will undertake the arduous trek in a Toyota Avensis, bought for just £300 under the rules of the contest, which will see scores of other teams also taking on the Champagne Charlie challenge.

Said Charlotte, 21, who is taking part in the motoring madness during a summer break from her studies as a contour fashion student at Leicester’s De Monfort University: “I am really looking forward to it, it should be a lot of fun.

“We’ve no idea if the car will get us to the finish line or not but hopefully we’ll get there and have some laughs along the way and celebrate with some champagne when we finish.”

Charlotte of Westerdale Road, Scawsby and Jez, 47, of Thorpehall Road, Kirk Sandall, will hit Europe’s greatest roads and cities in July as they bid to make it to the millionaire’s playground of Monte Carlo in Monaco. The challenge has been organised by Jez to celebrate Charlotte’s 21st birthday.

He said: “It is the first time we have ever done anything like this. It sounds like a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to seeing some great scenery along the way and getting there in one piece.”

The tiny state is synonymous with glitz and glamour and motoring challenges - the original Monte Carly Rally was established in 1911 by Prince Albert and has been won by some of the world’s best known drivers.

The pair are planning to make the journey from Saint-Quentin on July 17 to Monte Carlo on July 19 at a more sedate pace, taking part in a number of unknown challenges along the way and driving on some of the Continent’s most spectacular roads against backdrops of sun, sea, sand and even snow.

They will race through the Alps to Turin in Italy - the setting for famed motoring movie caper The Italian Job, around Lake Geneva in Switzerland before completing the challenge with a lap of the famed Monaco Grand Prix circuit.

“We are looking forward to having some laughs along the way and celebrating with champagne when we get there.”

And to add to the fun, the duo will be donning fancy dress and competing in set challenges against other drivers along the way, as well as raising cash for their chosen charity organisations Macmillan Cancer, Armthorpe Rovers FC and the 47th Edenthorpe Scout Group.

Added Jez: “I wanted to give my daughter something different for her 21st birthday. When she found out we were going to Monte Carlo she could not believe it.

“Then she noticed the small print – in a £300 banger undertaking challenges and looking silly on the way! We have had a lot of support from family, friends and local businesses including DPS Motors of Barnby Dun, Excel Components Ltd and Renault Sheffield.”

In 2014, more than 150 cars and 500 people successfully completed the challenge, raising more than £100,000 for charity.
