Chesterfield Borough Council has voted unanimously for a second time to become a full ‘constituent’ member of the Sheffield City Region devolution deal.

The vote, which was held earlier this evening at Chesterfield Town Hall, was called after a threatened legal challenge by Derbyshire County Council called into question the original decision.

However, rather than fighting the threatened challenge, council leaders decided to produce another report addressing the county council’s concerns and hold the vote again.

Chesterfield Borough Council leader, Councillor John Burrows, said: “The last two to three weeks have been a particularly difficult time for myself.

“However, the work we have done on the equalities impact assessment has been worthwhile.

“It is very difficult to say how the decision might affect all the protected groups - there may be negative impacts which we will seek to minimise but there may be positive impacts as well.

“However, at present there is only one deal on the table and we have to take the decision that is in the best interests of the people of Chesterfield.”
