Four men arrested by armed police on a street in Sheffield city centre have been released from custody.

South Yorkshire Police has today revealed that the men were arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

They were apprehended by officers with guns and dogs on Paternoster Row, just outside The Showroom cinema, last night.

An eye witness saw one man driven off in a police van and two others handcuffed by officers the side of the road, which was blocked off during the police operation.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the men were ‘inside a vehicle’ at the time of their arrest.

She stressed ‘there was no risk to the public during the incident’.

They have been released without charge.
