A CANDLELIT memorial ceremony to remember the victims of the Holocaust was held in Sheffield’s Winter Garden.

Sheffield Muslims joined members from a host of other communities on Holocaust Memorial Day to remember the murder of millions of people by the Nazis during the Second World War.

The ceremony was held on Thursday, the 66th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Abdool Gooljar, president of the Sheffield branch of the Islamic Society of Britain said: “It is vital that people from all communities continue to remember the Holocaust, with its important message of ‘Never again’.”

Mr Gooljar said this year the heroic acts of the ‘Islamic Schindlers’ were remembered.

They - like German hero Oskar Schindler - put their lives in danger to help save Jews and others from being sent to the death camps.

They included Mustafa Hardaga, who risked his life to hide a family in Sarajevo.

Their efforts are featured in a new booklet called ‘The Role of Righteous Muslim Persons.’
