GOING to the loo at a Doncaster church hall has become a thought-provoking experience.

In what must be Doncaster’s most unusual ‘twinning’ arrangement, while people are using the toilets in St Nicholas Church Hall, Bawtry, they can reflect on the clean and comfortable facilities while thinking about those less fortunate than themselves.

The conveniences at the Church Walk hall are now twinned with toilets in Third World Africa and Cambodia.

Around 2.6 million people in the world do not have somewhere safe, clean and hygienic to go to the toilet, which results in nearly one in five child deaths each year due to diarrhoea, says the charity behind the scheme.

As part of the campaign to try to rectify the situation, the Vicar of Bawtry, the Rev Jonathan Strickland, and his fellow PCC members have donated £60 to each of three toilets in the needy countries. Mr Strickland has hung framed photographs of the toilets in Giharo in Burundi, and those in Cambodia, that are twinned with the ladies and gents toilets in the church hall.

More information about the scheme can be found on the www.toilettwinning.org website.
