DEDICATED South Yorkshire volunteers with a charity which helps former armed forces personnel and their families have been rewarded for their efforts.

SSAFA Forces Help’s local president Col Geoffrey Norton gave long service awards to Ken Harrison, divisional secretary of the Barnsley branch, and Ronald Beat, who volunteers in Doncaster.

The presentation took place at Scarborough Barracks Territorial Army centre in Doncaster.

Mr Harrison, aged 75, who spent 22 years in the 10th Royal Hussars, said: “I served in Germany, Aden and Northern Ireland, demobbed in 1975 but decided to join SSAFA in 1991.

“We deal with almost 100 cases each year helping veterans and their families when they are in need.”

The charity, which has bases in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Thorne, has paid for a veteran with mobility problems to have a new scooter and adaptations to his home.
