There are so many reasons for you to sign up for The Star Walk 2013 - and one of Sheffield’s best known fundraisers has just added another.

John Burkhill, the self-confessed mad walker with the pram, will be taking part in the event on Sunday, April 28.

And he will be bringing with him his Olympic torch, so other participants can have their photo taken with the iconic emblem.

John’s first Star Walk was in 1967 and he is the first to admit that he trained hard to win, although was always pipped to the first spot.

This year’s mile-course around Hillsborough Park is very different as it has been designed for the Women of Steel, now in their 80s and 90s, to take part - but John is definitely looking forward to it.

And he will warm up before the 11am start by walking with his fundraising pram from The Star offices on York Street to Hillsborough Park.

John said: “I will be very proud to come along to the Star Walk for the Women of Steel Statue Appeal.

“The Star Walk was very special to me having competed in it more than 30 times.

“I pushed my pram round for charity during the last 10 years of the event. Three years ago I did 74 Star Walks straight off over 900 miles to commemorate how many Star Walks had taken place.

“Then on my 74th birthday this year I went out once again on the Star Walk course. I was joined by my very good friend the old Sheffield United Walking Club Captain John Eddershaw and together we walked the old course one last time. Great memories.

“I have been asked by many of the walkers in this year’s Star Walk to bring my Olympic torch so everyone can have a photo with it. I am looking forward to it and know it will be a great success.”
