AN INTREPID fundraiser has begun a mammoth triathlon challenge after staff at a Sheffield gym stepped in to help.

Nick Howden-Steenstra’s training for the 40-day Torch Triathlon was jeopardised when his grandmother Anne Shaw, of Sheffield, broke her hip and needed constant care.

Sheffield International Venues offered Nick a free month’s membership of Stocksbridge Leisure Centre, so he could continue training while staying in Sheffield to look after his gran, rather than returning home to Warwickshire.

He started the 2,600-mile challenge from Athens to London this week and hopes to raise £10,000 for charity.
