VANDALS drained a section of the Chesterfield Canal for the second weekend running - releasing thousands of gallons of water.
The gates were opened at Blue Bank Lock, between Brimington and Old Whittington, on Saturday evening, leaving the stretch of canal above the gates a third full.
It came just a week after another section of the canal, close to the Tapton Lock Visitor Centre, was drained completely by vandals.
The gates allow the water level to be altered for boats to pass up and down.
Coun Simon Spencer, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “These acts of vandalism could have had serious consequences for wildlife living in the affected areas.”
