SHEFFIELD Council has been criticised for its use of contractors from outside the city for environmental projects.
Pensioner Ralph Basford, aged 72, of Tinsley, saw a company working on roadside flower displays in Tinsley – and noticed the firm was from Mirfield, West Yorkshire. A company working in the Peace Gardens was from Chesterfield.
He said: “The council should be supporting local businesses rather than those outside the area – and what about the environmental cost of having to drive in to our city?”
A Sheffield Council spokesman said: “Our priority is to ensure we provide the best value for money for council tax payers. We have a fair tendering system to ensure we get services at the best price. We can’t favour local firms but what we can do is give them the best chance to bid.”
