HUNDREDS of balloons were launched into the skies over Rotherham as part of an appeal encouraging people to support local children in need.

The launch was held outside Riverside House in the town centre to mark Adoption Week, and coincided with the first of three information events where parents can find out about adopting children.

More events are happening at the New York Stadium today and tomorrow from 11am to 7pm.

Coun Paul Lakin, Rotherham Council’s cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “Our adoptive parents do a fantastic job in providing a safe, welcoming and caring environment for children.

“Becoming an adoptive parent is challenging but very rewarding, providing positive experiences for the adults and children involved.”

Around 40 children are currently up for adoption in Rotherham.
