University hosts cultural event
MUSIC, arts, crafts, film and world cultures will be explored when the University of Sheffield's Department of Music and Sheffield Cathedral host a programme of events next month.
The Summer Festival event, which will run between June 6 and June 19, will take place at Sheffield Cathedral.
Ten months in preparation, the artistic partnership was established to improve existing summer events programmes held by both institutions.
Highlights include a talk by leading British composer and conductor James MacMillan, interspersed with performances of his works by the Cathedral Choir.
Other highlights include performances by internationally renowned pianist Angela Brownridge, Mozart's Requiem with a talk by expert Professor Simon Keefe; a film of Nosferatu the Vampyre and an Indian Music event.
The festival will also include a range of art and craft events, including a talk by acclaimed glass designer Amber Hiscott.
Stewart Campbell, festival director and concerts coordinator for the university, said: "The creation of this Summer Festival came about through the merging of both the University's and Cathedral's existing summer music and arts programmes. Building on each other's strengths, it's been very satisfying to develop and progress our ideas and take them to new levels."
