THe army's bomb disposal unit was called to South Yorkshire to deal with an unexploded shell found by walkers in Flouch.

It was reported to South Yorkshire Police on Monday and officers called out to locate it asked members of the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team to help them.

A rescue team spokesman said: "At 8.30am on Tuesday Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team was called to assist South Yorkshire Police in the search for an unexploded shelldiscovered by walkers the previous day on Margery Hill near the Flouch Inn.

"Fourteen team members spent seven hours first searching for and locating the shell, and then assisting with the transport and safety of police officers including a Specialist Explosives Search Dog during the four kilometre hike over boggy peat moor up to the scene 500 metres above sea level.

"Bomb Disposal experts and equipment also required transport. The weather was most unkind with a series of thunderstorms and torrential rain ensuring conditions were challenging. The device was declared safe at 4pm."
