Two arrested in restaurant raid

IMMIGRATION officers raided an Indian restaurant in Sheffield and arrested two workers on suspicion of being illegal immigrants.

Now their bosses at the Spice Valley Balti House, Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, face a fine of up to 20,000 if they are unable to prove the two Pakistani men have the right to work in the UK.

The UK Border Agency raid formed part of a nationwide summer campaign to tackle illegal working, sham marriages and organised immigration crime.

Of the five members of staff at the restaurant when immigration staff arrived - acting on a tip-off - two were arrested for a variety of immigration offences.

They have since claimed asylum and have been detained pending the outcome of their claims.

Bosses at the restaurant have been warned they face hefty fine unless

they can prove they carried out the correct right-to-work checks on their employees.

Steve Lamb, Regional Operations Director for the UK Border Agency, said: "We will not tolerate illegal working in Sheffield or anywhere else in the UK. It undercuts British wages and exploits vulnerable workers.

"As long as there are illegal jobs, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal immigrants. That's why we have to put a stop to employers who don't play by the rules.

"There are strict rules about which foreign nationals can get a job in the UK and businesses have a clear responsibility to carry out the right checks."
