Two people were found dead after police were called to a house when concerns were raised about one of the occupants.
The bodies of David Connaughton, aged 60, and 57-year-old Julie Connaughton were discovered at the property on Walton Drive, Boythorpe, Chesterfield.
Shocked neighbours said it was like something out of a television soap opera.
Peter Revill, who lives close to the semi-detached house where the bodies were found, said: “We can’t believe it. It’s like something out of Coronation Street or Eastenders.”
Other shocked neighbours described how police descended on the neighbourhood throughout Friday afternoon.
The residents said officers then started carrying out door-to-door enquiries in the area.
One resident said: “My sister-in-law had been for a cup of tea and after she left she called me to ask what was happening because there were police everywhere and they were knocking on doors.
“Then a friend of mine told me there had been a double death, but I don’t rteally know the couple.”
Another resident, who had just returned from a holiday with his family, said: “It’s very sad. It’s the sort of thing you read about happening elsewhere but not on your own doorstep.”
A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to an address on Walton Drive, Chesterfield, on Friday, at about 2.15pm after concern was raised for one of the occupants.
“Officers entered the property and found two people dead inside the house.
“Detectives investigating the death of two people in Chesterfield are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths at this time.
“Police are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.”
Anyone with information about the deaths is asked to call Derbyshire police on 101.
