SHADOW Home Secretary Yvette Cooper lent her support to Labour’s Barnsley Central candidate Dan Jarvis yesterday.

Mr Jarvis, a former paratrooper, is favourite to replace disgraced MP Eric Illsley when voters go to the polls on Thursday.

He was joined by Ms Cooper on a visit to Athersley North Sure Start Centre.

Ms Cooper said: “Dan Jarvis is an excellent candidate who will really stand up for Barnsley.

“It was great to be at a Sure Start Centre to see the great work they are doing in communities like Athersley North.

“The Tory-led government has cut Labour’s grants to help children and young people in Barnsley by a quarter. Yet, despite this, Labour-led Barnsley Council are protecting Sure Starts next year.

n The other candidates in the by-election are: Dominic Carman, Lib Dem; Jane Collins, UKIP; Enis Dalton, BNP; Tony Devoy, independent; James Hockney, Conservative; Howling Laud Hope, Monster Raving Looney Party; Kevin Riddiough, English Democrats; and Michael Val Davies, independent.
