TWO teenage motorists arrested after a horror head-on smash which claimed the lives of three South Yorkshire teenagers have been bailed again by detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The men – a 19-year-old from Swinton, and an 18-year-old from Mexborough – were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the crash on Adwick Road, Mexborough, on Monday December 27.
After initial questioning they were bailed until this week, and they have now been bailed again until early April.
Three teenagers – Jonathan Scott, 17, of Park Road, Conisbrough; Robert Tepper, also 17, of Harlington Road, Mexborough and Lauren Birkett, 16, of Mexborough – died when the Vauxhall Corsa in which they were travelling was involved in a collision with a VW Golf heading in the opposite direction.
Jonathan, who was driving the Corsa, died at the scene along with his best friend Robert, while Lauren, who initially survived, later died in Rotherham District General Hospital.
Another girl in the car – 16-year-old Chloe Newby – is recovering, and the 56-year-old male Golf driver was injured.
South Yorkshire Police said the Corsa had been attempting to overtake a Fiat Punto when it collided with the VW Golf travelling in the opposite direction.
A Vauxhall Astra had overtaken the Punto moments before the collision.
