Twenty plenty on city estate

A SPEED limit of 20mph is to be introduced on a Sheffield housing estate after 70 road accidents in the last five years injured 12 child pedestrians and 10 adults.

The restriction will cover residential streets in the entire Shiregreen area, bounded by Ecclesfield Road, Barnsley Road, Bellhouse Road and Hartley Brook Dyke, although the limit on main roads including Bellhouse Road will remain 30mph.

The move follows consultation with residents in the area. Around 5,000 letters were sent out asking for their opinions. Only 37 people responded, and just five objected.

No additional speed humps will be installed but the cost of signs and new road markings will cost around £50,000 over the next financial year. Sheffield Council’s head of transport and highways John Bann said the cost was justified.
