TV licence dodgers hit

MORE than 3,000 TV licence dodgers have been caught watching their sets in South Yorkshire this year.

More than 1,740 people were snared by TV Licensing detector vans in Sheffield, 870 people in Rotherham and 630 in Barnsley.

Across the UK, approximately 5,000 more licence fee dodgers were caught in the first six months of 2009 compared to the same period last year.

The average evasion rate is currently just over five per cent, meaning that almost 95 per cent of properties are correctly licensed.

A colour TV licence costs 142.50. Anyone not holding a licence risks prosecution and a fine of up to 1,000.
