PATIENTS at St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield were bowled over by a special donation from members of the city’s Woodturning Club.

Club members handed over 24 individual sycamore fruit bowls for use in the hospice’s in-patient unit.

Members of the club handed over the bowls, and £1,700 in cash, to community fundraising manager Abby Batchelor.

The money was raised during a year-long sponsorship by the club, and members also then used their woodturning skills to create the bowls.

The sycamore to create the bowls was sourced for the club by Steve Wright of Elston Sawmill at Newark, and the wood was treated with a food-safe finish donated by Chestnut Products.

Sheffield Woodturning Club’s charity of the year for next year will be Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston.

Club chairman Walt Claxton said: “We are delighted the club was able to contribute to St Luke’s Hospice. Last year we also took our lathe to several fundraising events, to demonstrate woodturning, with great success.”
