Forget the multi-coloured boots. Only the most brilliant players wear their shirt outside their shorts. Only the very best should even think about it.
For “best” we have George Best for starters. And here in the city of steel, the modern era has seen the true hallmark of footballing genius worn by two players in particular, United’s Tony Currie and Wednesday’s Chris Waddle. Best keep that shirt tucked in until you are as good as either of them and it could be a very long wait.
This weekend, Currie is naturally at the centre of the Blades’ 125th anniversary dinner celebrations. A true legend who has made the city in general and the club
in particular his adopted home as a fixture around the place almost since his playing days as arguably the greatest in Bramall Lane history.
Let’s preserve the standard, shall we? While all those bright boots might flash and sparkle (anyone thought of black as a fashion statement?), the truly twinkle toed ones have a different measure. It’s the shirt outside the shorts that is – or should be – reserved for the genuine article.
And so I’m thrilled to say that TC will be among my guests tonight (Thursday) for the debut of a weekly show I’m presenting on the new Sheffield Live! TV channel. You’ll find us on Freeview Channel 8 and online from 7pm.
