Trophy glory for disabled footballers

Have your say

DONCASTER Rovers director of football Mickey Walker knows talent when he sees it.

And there was plenty on show when he visited a team of disabled Doncaster footballers who have just won their league championship.

The players, from the Thorne Lions team, have just won the West Riding FA Ability Counts Football League, and they invited Mickey round to see their trophy.

The team is drawn from Thorne Family Support Group, which provides sports and leisure activities for people with special needs. There are eight teams in their league, from all over the West Riding County FA, covering areas such as Pontefract, Wakefield, Bradford and Harrogate.

There are nine players in the team, which plays five-a-side games.

Sylvia Goldspink, secretary of the Thorne Family Support Group, said: “I can’t tell you how pleased they are. They’ve worked so hard all year round and they’re full of enthusiasm.

“It is such a joy to watch them play football.”
