Tributes to student killed in taxi collision

SHEFFIELD University has paid tribute to a "bright and talented" student who died after being struck by a taxi in the city at the weekend.

Ka Yi Wu, aged 19, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after apparently stepping into the path of a cab moments after getting off a bus on the A57 Manchester Road in Broomhill.

The Chinese student, known to friends as Joyce, had spent the evening studying in the university library and was only a minute's walk from her home on Tapton House Road just after midnight on Saturday.

Ka Yi was originally from Hong Kong but had lived in the UK for several years, having completed her A-levels at Lincoln College.

She was in her second year of a three-year Business Studies degree in The University of Sheffield's management school.

Debora Green, assistant director in student services at The University of Sheffield, said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Ka Yi Wu and offer our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

"The university has offered support to her housemates during this difficult time and we will also be extending our support to the family and any staff or students who have been affected."

The taxi driver was arrested in connection with the incident and bailed pending further inquiries. Witnesses should call 0114 220 2970.
