NEIGHBOURS of a teenager killed in a car crash just days before Christmas have paid tribute to ‘a very nice lad indeed’.

Luke Hardwick, aged 18, was the passenger in a BMW which collided with a white large goods vehicle.

A one-year-old girl who was also travelling in the car suffered a life-threatening head injury, and is being treated in Sheffield Children’s Hospital where her condition remains critical.

The little girl, from Wath, is believed by neighbours to be Luke’s niece.

Neighbours of Luke’s family in tiny cul-de-sac Benton Terrace, Swinton, near Rotherham, told The Star everyone is shocked and saddened.

Darren Haffner, who lives across the road, said everybody in the neighbourhood liked Luke.

“Luke was the kind of lad who kept himself to himself,” he said. “He was a quiet lad who never caused anyone any problems. He was a very nice lad indeed.

“Our thoughts are with his family.”

The driver of the BMW - a 31-year-old man - was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been bailed pending further inquiries.

The collision happened at about 12.20pm last Thursday when the silver BMW 316 Compact, which had been travelling towards Doncaster on the Great North Road, pulled out of a lay-by to perform a U-turn in front of a white DAF goods vehicle.

The BMW spun on the carriageway, knocked down a metal road sign, and came to rest on a grass verge facing towards Wakefield.

The lorry, driven by a 36-year-old man, remained on the road.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward - call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident 431 of December 20.

n A WOMAN had to be cut from the wreckage of her vehicle which crashed in South Yorkshire in the early hours.

Firefighters from Barnsley Central Station used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the woman from her car on Redbrook Road, Gawber, at around 4.15am on Saturday.

She was taken to Barnsley Hospital.

Eight hours later two people were cut from the wreckage of their car after it crashed into a hedge in Sheffield Road, Staveley. The driver and his passenger were taken by ambulance to Calow Hospital for precautionary checks at around noon on Saturday. They are not thought to have sustained serious injuries.
