Tributes have been paid to former Chesterfield mayor Trudi Mulcaster who has died after a long illness.
Mrs Mulcaster was a Liberal councillor for the former West ward between 1973 and 1979 and Lib Dem councillor for West ward from 1996 to 2007.
She served as mayor of Chesterfield from 2006 to 2007, supporting the charity Pathways of Chesterfield and helping the homeless during her year of office.
She taught at St Joseph’s Convent School, Newbold Road, Chesterfield, until 1980 when she and her husband moved to Birmingham before returning to Chesterfield in 1995.
Council leader John Burrows said: “Trudi was a lovely lady who transcended politics. She was a community activist and her mayoral year was a clear example of this.”
Lib Dem leader Coun Ray Russell added: “Trudi was a very kind and caring person. She made a great contribution, both to her local community and to Chesterfield generally, helping out in many groups and organisations.
“As mayor she raised money for the homeless, which illustrated very clearly the generous support she willingly gave over her lifetime for those in need.”
Mrs Mulcaster’s funeral is at 11.30am on Friday at the Church of the Annunciation followed by cremation at Chesterfield and District Crematorium.
