A FORMER two-time mayoress, and wife of one of Doncaster Council’s best known leaders, has died.
Lena Gallimore, who was married to former mayor and council chief Gordon, died at the age of 87.
Mrs Gallimore, who was born and lived her entire life in Bentley, first held the title of mayoress in 1976 and returned to the Mansion House alongside her husband in 1994 - the celebratory 800th anniversary year of Doncaster being granted a charter by King Richard I.
The couple’s only child, daughter Sharon Golze, said: “She was very much a family woman - she loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always very supportive of my dad.”
Although never involved directly in local politics, Mrs Gallimore, who was born in 1925, was a keen member and supporter of the Labour Party and a long-standing member of Doncaster Women’s Guild.
During the Second World War she worked for the fire service, and in 1948 married Mr Gallimore who was already involved in local politics.
Long-standing councillor Mr Gallimore led the council during the 1980s and early 1990s before stepping down in 1994 following his mayoral year.
Mrs Golze added: “She enjoyed the opportunities being mayoress gave her, to meet people and travel.”
The funeral will take place on February 13 at Rose Hill Crematorium at 2.40pm.
