MOURNERS gathered to remember one of a South Yorkshire town’s most well-known characters who died after a long battle against cancer.
Fred Edwards, civic chauffeur to the Mayor of Rotherham, died at Rotherham Hospice on Saturday. His funeral was held yesterday at Rotherham Crematorium.
The 56-year-old, from Rawmarsh, was well-known for driving and accompanying the mayor to civic events and leading guided tours around Rotherham Town Hall.
Mayor of Rotherham Coun Rose McNeely said: “Fred’s passing away will be a terrible loss to everyone who knew him. He was an invaluable help to all mayors over the years because he had a huge wealth of knowledge and advice on both the mayor’s role and the civic history.”
Mr Edwards leaves a widow, Yvette, daughters Kimberley and Emma.
