Tremor reports a mystery
SHEFFIELD residents are all shook up... by a mysterious earthquake!
The Star reported on Monday how Rodger Kelly, of Whirlow Brook Park, was in bed with wife Christine when he heard a strange rumbling noise in the early hours of Tuesday, December 29.
Rodger said the house started 'shuddering' and his digital clock was also affected by the quake.
And more readers have since come forward to say they felt the earth move, too.
Edward Dunn, aged 40, a car dealer from Loxley, said he felt the quake at the same time as the Kellys, and that his mum, Sue, experienced it too.
"I was half asleep and felt a bit of a tremor," he said. "At first I thought I was dreaming – I didn't realise what it was until my mum mentioned it the next morning."
Marion McDowall, of Fulwood, said she heard a loud cracking noise that woke her in the night, and that the tremor had made cracks in the plaster in her bedroom.
And John and Sue Tandy, from Loxley, said they also felt the earthquake while in bed.
John, 59, said: "My wife asked me if I was shaking – I wasn't aware of any shaking but something had disturbed my sleep and, obviously, hers as well.
Labourer Steve Atkinson, 52, said he felt the quake as far away as Rotherham, and that his bed 'shook gently' for about 30 seconds.
But Davie Galloway, from UK earthquake monitors the British Geological Survey, said there was "certainly not anything felt in the Sheffield area" on December 29.
