Travellers should know all their rights
HOLIDAYMAKERS from South Yorkshire who are thinking of booking a late summer trip or winter break could be forgiven for questioning the security of their plans following high profile travel chaos this year.
Millions of travellers' holiday dreams have been left in tatters in 2010 following the failure of numerous tour operators including Goldtrail, Kiss Flights and MSE.
There has also been widespread disruption from volcanic ash and cabin crew strikes.
On the bright side, if a firm goes bust or flights are cancelled, there is often plenty of financial protection via the Atol and Abta schemes, even if that cannot always compensate for the loss of a holiday.
Moneysavingexpert.com has a host of tips for travellers including a list of travellers' rights.
Guy Anker from the website said: "If your travel provider goes bust your rights vary, depending on the type of holiday booked and whether your tour operator, travel agent, airline or hotel goes under."
Those who have booked a package holiday - technically a holiday consisting of two or more elements that is sold for an inclusive price - should be fully protected.
If the package includes a flight it will be protected under the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (Atol) scheme, whereas packages without flights are protected under the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tour Regulations.
Those booking DIY trips have fewer rights and less protection.
