Travel tribute to heroes of wartime bomber crash

A NEW bus has been named in honour of the American airmen who died when a bomber crashed in Endcliffe Park 65 years ago.

South Yorkshire Transport Executive named the bus Mi Amigo, after the Flying Fortress which came down, killing all 10 crew, on February 22 1944.

The B17 was returning home from a mission to destroy a German base in Alborg, Denmark, when tragedy struck. It was hit by enemy fire and managed to limp back to Britain but veered off course and came down in Sheffield.

An SYPTE spokesman said it was the latest bus to be named after notable places or events in Sheffield history including the Sheffield Flood of 1864 and the city's rivers.

On Sunday scores of people attended a wreath-laying ceremony at a memorial at the scene of the crash in Endcliffe Park. It was followed by a service in St Augustine's Church, Brocco Bank.
