A translator is helping firefighters provide safety messages to Roma-Slovac residents in a Sheffield suburb.

The translator has been provided by Global Lettings, which lets out properties in Page Hall, where a large Roma-Slovac community has built up over recent years.

He is helping firefighters pass on safety messages to residents in home visits to check for fire hazards.

Steve Helps, a South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue area manager, said: "South Yorkshire is safer from fire than it’s been at any time in its history, but it’s important that we continue to target our safety advice at all sections of the community, including new migrants.

“During a home safety check, fire service staff speak to residents about how to prevent common causes of fire like cooking and electrics and fit smoke alarms where needed.”
