Tramgate fines are back

DRIVERS who flout restrictions at Hillsborough tramgates will be fined again from this week, as council bosses reinstate camera enforcement.

For the past few months fines have been waived while council chiefs made alterations to signage warning drivers about the restrictions ahead.

The restriction holiday came when Alan Bangert, of Wisewood, won an appeal against his fines after the National Parking Appeals Service ruled warnings on Middlewood Road and Langsett Road weren't good enough.

Sheffield highways bosses had to stop fining motorists who drive through the tramgates until the signs were changed.

After pressure from drivers, the council agreed to pay back thousands of fines to drivers.

Now those changes have been made and the tramgate will be enforced once more.

For the past few weeks the council has warned drivers they could be fined again.

But from this week warnings will be replaced by 60 penalty notices – reduced to 30 if paid promptly.

Only buses, trams and taxis can drive through the gates.

Last year CCTV enforcement led to a 97 per cent drop in vehicles flouting the restrictions in the first month of operation – netting Sheffield Council at least 84,000, or 2,700 a day.

The tramgate was originally installed to stop Hillsborough Corner getting snarled up with traffic and delaying buses.

Coun Ian Auckland, cabinet member for transport at Sheffield Council, said: "We wanted to ensure as many motorists as possible were aware of the restrictions and impending enforcement.

"We have made improvements to the carriageway, improved warning signs on approach to the gates and run an awareness campaign.

"We have listened to local people and made changes accordingly, so I hope there will be as little confusion as possible in the future."
