FURTHER praise has been given to Government plans to spend £58 million trialling tram-trains between Sheffield and Rotherham.
Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce called the service - due to start in 2015 - a ‘great opportunity’.
Andrew Denniff, executive director at the chamber, said: “The argument against it is that it will drag trade out of Rotherham and into Meadowhall and Sheffield, but I disagree entirely. The tracks run both ways.
“This is a great opportunity to get more people into Rotherham town centre and make use of the new Rotherham Central station.”
Coun Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council’s Lib Dem shadow cabinet member for transport, added: “The tram-train project will bring new jobs to Sheffield and put South Yorkshire at the cutting edge of green transport.”
