Training concerns
A SHEFFIELD MP has raised concerns about the training offered to Corus workers who are about to be made redundant.
Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith has been approached by several workers who have faced problems accessing the vocational retraining promised when redundancies were announced this year.
Steel giant Corus has cut more than 1,500 jobs in South Yorkshire this year, 700 of them in Stocksbridge.
The Labour MP said "unnecessary bureaucracy" within the Jobcentre Plus Rapid Response Team meant there had been delays in securing funded places on training courses – "leading to anxiety and frustration on the part of workers".
Ian Hanks of Job Centre Plus said: "I am aware some people have had to wait longer than is acceptable for their training. We have moved to solve some problems with our partners."
Angela Smith has asked that any worker who faces difficulty accessing training contact her in confidence by emailing smithac@parliament.uk or calling 0114 283 1855.
