Tragic earl recalled as civil war rages
HISTORY was brought to life in South Yorkshire when parts of the Civil War were re-enacted at a historic church.
Members of The Sealed Knot Society from all over the country gathered at the Old Holy Trinity Church, in Wentworth, to honour the memory of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford.
The church returned to the 17th century, with visitors exploring a living history encampment and watching as soldiers learned to drill and fire their weapons.
There were guided tours of the church as well as a walk around the building's Fitzwilliam Crypt.
Thomas Wentworth was a leading Royalist, executed by order of Parliament in May 1641 when Charles I sacrificed him in an attempt to avoid civil war.
Throughout the event, donations were collected towards the conservation of the church, which is believed to have medieval origins.
Most of the church is now in ruins, though the chancel and North Chapel remain intact and are still sometimes used for services and concerts.
The building now acts as a home for a collection of monuments to past generations of the Wentworth family while the church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.
