Motorists were caught up in traffic chaos this morning when 14 vehicles suffered punctured tyres on The Parkway heading into Sheffield.
Police started to receive reports of blow outs from drivers at 6.42am and officers closed the city-bound carriageway.
It is believed raised grates were responsible for the punctured tyres.
A police spokeswoman said affected motorists were forced to pull up, blocking the road.
The decision to close the carriageway, from junction 33 of the M1, was made on safety grounds.
It re-opened at 8.22am
Commuters were stuck in tailbacks on the M1 stretching back to junction 32 at Thurcroft.
Treeton was gridlocked as motorists attempted to find alternative ways to The Parkway.
