Town hall steps protest on blockade of Gaza Strip

DOZENS of people carrying flags, placards and a coffin gathered in Sheffield to protest about Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Members of Sheffield Palestinian Solidarity Campaign were joined by Stop The War representatives for the vigil, which took place outside the Town Hall.

It followed horror stories including a nine-year-old boy with a life-threatening renal condition who is stranded in Gaza and cannot cross the border for treatment.

Mushier El-Farra, chairman of Sheffield Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, said: "We are calling for an end to the siege. There have been some very traumatising stories."

Mr El-Farra said 52 people attended the vigil, where posters also called for western Governments to avoid another military campaign in Iran.

The group is holding a public meeting to discuss the blockade of the Gaza Strip by Israel on Wednesday January 23 at the Quaker Meeting House, James Street, in the city centre, from 7.30pm.

It includes a presentation by a representative from an international voluntary organisation which is taking a boat loaded with supplies across the Mediterranean from Cyprus to Gaza to assist.
