Town Hall's style is an inspiration!
SHEFFIELD Town Hall is a source of inspiration for creative city artists.
Trish O'Shea and Katie Davies will each spend eight weeks as artists in residence at the venue, as part of the Yorkshire ArtSpace Society's Residency Programme, which offers artists space, money and time to develop new work.
It is the first time the society has offered a residence outside its studio in the Persistence Works, and it is also the Town Hall's debut as a creative workshop.
Coun Sylvia Dunkley, cabinet member for culture, leisure and streetscene, said there are more artists working in Sheffield than in any other city outside London and added: "Sheffield has a wealth of creative talent.
"Not only is this good for the artists but it's also an unusual way for staff and visitors to the Town Hall to get involved in art, and participate in the city's creative scene."
Trish, whose residency will run until August 31, intends to explore the different aspects of the Town Hall through mapping exercises, while Katie – who will be in the building between October 6 and November 30 – will make a film.
Trish said: "The Town Hall is a beautiful building standing proud in the centre of Sheffield.
"It stands surrounded by a changing cityscape and I'm looking forward to exploring the building – and getting to know the people who work there and visit the building."
Katie added: "I'm inspired by the fact that, when it was built, the Town Hall symbolised the promise of Victorian modernity.
"It embodied a futuristic vision.
"I intend to make a film which focuses on the many ceremonial and work routines that take place."
