A FORMER Sheffield city councillor who is still a member of Stocksbridge Town Council has quit the Liberal Democrats.
Retired police Inspector Jack Clarkson will remain as an independent town councillor. He said he left the Lib Dems in the wake of leader Nick Clegg’s apology over tuition fees, which he found ‘embarrassing and shameful’.
Coun Clarkson, who lost his city council seat in May after four years, said Mr Clegg’s integrity was ‘shot to pieces’.
He also accused his party’s leadership of ‘devious planning’ by talking about forming another coalition with Labour after the 2015 general election. Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Lib Dem leader on Sheffield Council, said: “Clearly I’m disappointed to hear that Jack has now decided leave the party.”
