STOCKSBRIDGE Town Council is to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of a UKIP councillor over comments made on Twitter about Jews.

Grant French, aged 44, who was UKIP candidate at the last general election in the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency, also resigned as chairman of UKIP constituency branch.

He said he had resigned from the council and party chairmanship to avoid any embarrassment to members.

The town council has now declared a casual vacancy for Mr French’s South Ward seat and if there are no applicants for a by-election they will co-opt a new member.

Speaking at the town council meeting about the resignation, town Mayor, Coun Mrs Sue Abrahams, said: “It was all extremely distasteful.”
