Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce is backing the public access wi-fi network which has gone live in Barnsley town centre.
During the last six months, Barnsley Council has been working with AWTG Ltd to install the Barnsley Town Centre Wi-Fi network, which enables the public to access the internet free of charge.
The network will operate for a minimum of two years and it is hoped the ability to access free wi-fi will attract shoppers into Barnsley town centre.
The aim is also to increase internet usage among the town’s residents.
Owen Gleadall, the chamber’s vice president said: “The network will allow people to be online while they are mobile, which is sure to attract more people to the town centre and will be positive for retailers and other businesses.”
